Linguistic disfluency in narrative speech: evidence from story-telling in 6-year olds
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper deals with the production of mazes in narrative speech. The analysis is based on experimental data of 24 typically developing monolingual Lithuanian children from middle-class families, attending a state kindergarten. During the experiment, the children were asked to tell a story according to the picture sequence. After transcription of audiorecorded stories, production of mazes was measured automatically by using CHILDES tools; the obtained data was compared to the main microstructural indications such as story productivity and syntactic complexity using SPSS tools. During the investigation, statistically significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between hesitations and revisions was found. However, production of mazes cannot be related to either story productivity (namely, story length in CU) or to syntactic complexity (namely, CL/CU ratio).

متن کاملThe Analysis of the Discourse Markers in the Narratives Elicited from Persian-speaking Children
Discourse markers (DMs) are linguistic elements that index different relations and coherence between units of talk. Most research on the development of these forms has focused on conversations rather than narratives. This article examines age and medium effects on use of various discourse markers in pre-school children. Fifteen normal Iranian monolingual children, male and female, participated ...

Two groups of children who were slow in expressive language development (SELD) at age 2 and a matched group of toddlers with normal language were re-evaluated at age 4. Assessment included measures of productive syntactic skills in spontaneous speech and narrative abilities in a standard story retelling task. Four-year-olds who continued to perform below the normal range in sentence structure p...
متن کاملA comparison of disfluency patterns in normal and stuttered speech
While speech disfluencies are commonly found in every speaker’s speech, stuttering is a language disorder characterized by an abnormally high rate of speech aberrations, including prolongation, cessation, and repetition of speech segments [5]. However, despite the obvious differences between stuttered and normal speech, identifying the crucial qualities that identify stuttered speech remains a ...
